How this tool works: method and sources

  1. The checklist covers the steps that most often decide whether you get your full deposit back: notice, evidence, cleaning, keys, forwarding address, meter readings and a walkthrough.
  2. Your checks are saved in your browser’s local storage on this device. We never receive them, and clearing your browser data removes them.
  3. Pick a state to see its verified month-to-month notice days and deposit return deadline. Add your move-out date and the tool shows the dates counted from it. Where a rule is not verified, it says so.
  4. The state data in this tool was researched from primary sources (state codes and attorney general guides) and checked November 2026. Each result links the statute it uses. If a rule is marked not verified, the tool shows no number for it.
