Roommate Rent Split Calculator

Enter the total rent and your roommates to split rent and utilities four fair ways.

How this tool works: method and sources

  1. Equal: total rent divided by the number of roommates.
  2. Room square footage or income: each person pays the total rent times their share of the combined square footage or monthly income.
  3. Custom premiums: each person with a private bathroom or parking space pays the premium you set, and the rest of the rent is split equally.
  4. Amounts are rounded to the cent using a largest-remainder method, so the shares always add up to the exact total. Utilities can be split equally or by the same method.
  5. The state data in this tool was researched from primary sources (state codes and attorney general guides) and checked November 2026. Each result links the statute it uses. If a rule is marked not verified, the tool shows no number for it.
